Meet Poncho, The Dog Waiting For A Loving Home Since June
Adopting a dog is one of the most amazing things you can do. Take it from me. I've adopted many dogs throughout my lifetime, and every one of them has quickly become a part of our family.
There are many adoption agencies around the country with dogs waiting for their forever home. One of those agencies is the Susquehanna Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
According to a recent posting, the SQSPCA notes that they take pride in finding the right homes for adoptable pets as quickly as possible. Helping to minimize the amount of time animals spend in the shelter is their goal, matching up the right pet with the right family.
Last year, the average length of stay was 34 days, which was below the mid-year national average of 47 days for dogs, according to Shelter Animals Count, a data-sharing and analysis program of the ASPCA.
An animal’s length of stay is incredibly important to us. No matter how hard our team works to provide enrichment, comfort, and love, nothing compares to being in a home. When we notice an animal is being overlooked, we create a special action plan to help pave their way to adoption. - SQSPCA Executive Director Stacie Haynes.
The SQSPCA’s longest resident dog is 'Poncho', who first came to the shelter in June 2025. He is long overdue for his forever home.
Director Haynes notes:
For Poncho, we believe it really comes down to his shy personality. He’s not the dog barking excitedly with a wagging tail at the front of his kennel. Instead, he’s usually curled up calmly on his bed, quietly observing the world around him.
According to the SQSPCA, Poncho has spent time in a foster home, where the foster family noted that while he needed patience and time to build trust, their resident dogs helped show him that people can be kind and safe.
According to a DNA test, Poncho's genetic makeup includes Labrador Retriever, Rottweiler, Boxer, American Pitbull Terrier, and a bit of Cocker Spaniel. He would be a great addition to any loving family looking for a dog.
