State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Thursday that the mayors of Rochester and Syracuse as well as 11 other officials across the state have joined the secure our smartphones (SOS) initiative.

SOS was created by the Schneiderman and San Francisco California DA George Casgon. The coalition was formed in response to the epidemic of smartphone thefts throughout the country.

The initiative involves meeting with smartphone representatives to find a way to disable a smartphone when it is stolen.
