Richfield Springs School Gets Grant To Create ‘Resilience Room’ For Stressed Students
Talk about stressful times! We've all been feeling it since the pandemic began and kids are no exception. The uncertainty of the times we're in now is a struggle to deal with for anyone, let alone children. Now Richfield Springs Central School gets to help students deal with their stresses in a new way thanks to an educational grant from the Community Foundation of Otsego County and distributed through Safe Schools Mohawk Valley.
The funding received will be used to construct what's called a "Resilience Room" at the school. The idea of a room like this is to create a special place where students can come to and decompress in a supportive environment with welcoming professionals to help them feel that they are not alone and no situation is hopeless. It's a safe place to be themselves and destress with a variety of tools to help them.
According to Community Foundation of Otsego County, the room will designed with different areas to meet the different needs of the students in the room. For example, there will be a quiet area, there might be an area where students can listen to music, and even an area for yoga. It will be outfitted with multiple tools meant to soothe students having a hard time.
Students are having a hard time "bouncing back" from the stresses of the COVID pandemic and need some extra help according to Richfield Springs Elementary Principal Dr. René Wilson. She notes that while mental health concerns are not unique to coping with COVID stresses, but it has put issues of mental health under the spotlight.
The plan for the Resilience Room is to have it completed by the end of the school year.
