Here at Townsquare Media, we have been in contact with local National Weather Service Observer Dave Mattice who has an update on what being called "Snow Storm Harper" that is making it's way to us here in Chenango, Delaware and Otsego Counties this weekend. Below is what he has to say about this storm...

"After studying both the U.S. and European (weather) models, I'm going to stick my neck out and predict that the listening area will receive a storm total 14" - 18" by late Sunday afternoon.  I keep hearing 'no big deal, it's just a snowstorm'.  True for sure, sort of, but Harper has the potential of meeting the criteria of a blizzard by late Saturday night and into Sunday morning.  The greatest dangers of the storm, in my opinion are:

1. The brutally cold and strong winds that will develop Sunday morning as the storm starts to pull away to our north and east.  We can expect winds in excess of 35 mph at times, causing blowing and drifting snow.

2. The very strong winds on the backside of the storm, (which is what it's called as it pulls away) will change direction from easterly to the northwest and as it does, it will usher in brutally frigid, arctic air.  It's going to be dangerously cold and it will produce whiteout conditions.  Windchills of -25 degrees and below can be expected.  It's not going to be safe to be outdoors, so stay inside and off the roads.  Frostbite can occur in just a few minutes if bare skin is exposed to these conditions.  Pay extra attention to your pets and please keep children inside.  Don't be afraid of the storm but please do respect the dangers that will accompany it.  Please use good judgement and be safe."
