Since the texting while driving law went into effect a year ago, New York State issued four times as many tickets for texting while driving.

The new law allows police officials to pull a car over for that offense alone. Before, a ticket could only be issued for the offense if a driver was stopped for another traffic violation.

The southern tier saw more than 1,300 issued, or 5 times more than the year before. Police compare the signs of driving while texting, to driving while intoxicated.
