A fishing derby was created by Dutch Damaschke 56 years ago in the city of Oneonta and it continues to be me a much anticipated annual event at Hodges Pond in Neahwa Park. Steve "Lefty" Andrews, city recreation director, says the annual fishing derby scheduled for tomorrow is a great family event.

Opening day for trout and salmon fishing begins today with high, cold water and icy banks and stream beds anticipated. This could make for a dangerous early season angling, particularly in northern areas of the state, Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens said.

The 55th annual Fishing Derby presented by the Oneonta City Recreation Department and the Susquehanna Bass Association will be held on Saturday, August 11 at Hodges Pond in Neahwa Park, Oneonta.
