Student Repeatedly Shot Near Binghamton High School

A Binghamton High School student was rushed to a hospital after he was shot in the chest on Main Street, just west of the school.

The 18-year-old man was wounded by multiple shots after an altercation erupted in the area of the Family Dollar store and the Royal Fried Chicken restaurant.

The shooting happened around 11:15 a.m., just after some students left the school for lunch.

Police and school officials said the student - whose name was not released - was in serious but stable condition at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City.

Witnesses told WNBF News they heard three gunshots during a dispute on Main Street between Oak and Murray streets.

The high school, along with West Middle, Thomas Jefferson Elementary and Horace Mann elementary schools went to "lockout" mode just after the shooting.

The suspect fled the scene. He was last seen running behind apartment buildings on Murray Street, north of Main Street.

An increased police presence around the high school was noted around dismissal time.

The shooting occurred shortly before school administrators demonstrated newly-acquired weapon screening equipment to news reporters.
