LATEST: Teenager Shot Near Binghamton High School

A teenager was gunned down late Monday morning on Main Street in Binghamton, just west of the city's high school.

Multiple gunshots rang out around 11:15 a.m. Thursday near the Royal Fried Chicken Restaurant at 52 Main Street.

According to Binghamton police, the victim was an 18-year-old man who sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Witnesses said the man had been shot in the chest. He was transported to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City by a Superior ambulance.

A woman near the high school told WNBF News she heard three gunshots.

The high school and several other Binghamton schools went into "lockout" mode immediately after the shooting.

Police chief Joseph Zikuski arrived at the scene a few minutes after the incident was reported.

Main Street was closed between Oak and Murray streets as detectives began to search the area for evidence and started interviewing witnesses.

The shooter was seen running from the area. Witnesses said he was last spotted heading north on Murray Street.

A police canine unit was called to attempt to track the suspect.
