The newly proposed “Serve” Act would grant volunteer firefighters and emergency responders a $1,000 income tax credit.

Representative Richard Hanna sponsored the bill, which is designed to cover some of a volunteer's costs and encourage others to join. Hanna discussed the bill with volunteer firefighters Monday in Homer.

Homer Fire Chief Mahlon Irish is highly in favor of the bill saying it helps volunteers pay for items they need to serve the community and be a volunteer. The bill is endorsed by the National Volunteer Fire Council.
