UPDATE: Suspect ID’d; Otsego County Deputy Seriously Injured

May 22nd update:

New York State Police have released an update regarding the person that died in the motor vehicle collision in the village of Richfield Springs and the town of Springfield Tuesday, following police pursuit. The deceased suspect has been identified as 23 year old Matthew E. All, of Sharon Springs.

May 21st report:

The New York State Police reported that Tuesday, Deputy Sheriff James Mateunas was seriously injured after being struck head-on by a motor vehicle fleeing law enforcement in the Town of Springfield.

Police say that just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, New York State Police officers approached a suspect in a vehicle who had been accused of harassing and then threatening a victim with a knife. The suspect fled from troopers and led police on a chase heading east on State Route 20.

As the subject approached the intersection of State Routes 20 and 80, the Otsego County Sheriff’s Deputy was stationary in his vehicle facing west and monitoring the pursuit with his emergency lights activated. For an unknown reason, the subject crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the Deputy head-on .

Mateunas was transported to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.  The investigation is on-going.
