The Oneonta History Center’s Remodeling Transformation Into A Treasured Museum
The Oneonta History Center, the pride and joy of the Greater Oneonta Historical Society (GOHS) which began back in 1939 and is the oldest building on Oneonta's Main Street, just celebrated its Grand Reopening following a 4-month-long renovation project to maximize the first-floor space and develop a professional, museum-quality experience, showing off the many facets of Oneonta's fascinating history from its beginnings.
GOHS' Director, Dr. Marcela Micucci, who as an Oneonta native, returned to the town of her childhood after the COVID-19 pandemic kicked in, had been sharing the History Center's renovation progress on the Oneonta History Center Facebook page.
After visiting the History Center only a few hours shy of the "big reveal" to the public, a work crew was administering finishing touches to get the space ready for the evening's celebration of its reopening with GOHS volunteers buzzing around, helping with preparations for the celebration to come. What I saw impressed me greatly! The end result was fantastic and really showed off Oneonta's History in a great way.
This whole renovation project was made possible thanks to the Oneonta History Center receiving the Humanities NY Sharp Action Grant. Along with being able to do the renovations to the center, with that money, GOHS was able to fund a new permanent exhibition to be called “Small Community, Big Ideas: Greater Oneonta” which is an update to the former permanent exhibition with new materials not seen before at the History Center.

I highly recommend visiting the "new and improved" History Center. If you have young kids, don't worry because there's even a little kids' corner to keep them busy. I think that Oneonta residents will not only find the exhibits fascinating but any out-of-town visitor, after checking out the History Center, will most certainly walk away with a new appreciation for Oneonta, NY.
