‘Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates’ Trailer Sends Four Stars to Hawaii
Destination weddings are, by anyone’s measure, the absolute worst. You shell out big-ass cash money to fly to some far-flung corner of the tropics, just to bear witness to someone else’s happiness? A vacation you take as a favor to someone else, the destination wedding is the scourge of the social calendar, but Adam DeVine and Zac Efron inadvertently stumble upon the perfect antidote to the lameness in the newly revealed trailer for Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates. As the title may suggest, the brothers Mike (DeVine) and Dave (Efron) Stangle need wedding dates. What they get is more than either had bargained for.
Aubrey Plaza and Anna Kendrick, real-life partners in crime, play the two young women that Mike and Dave ensnare as their companions for their sister’s picture-perfect Hawaii wedding. But who is ensnaring whom? Mike and Dave, tasked by their father (Stephen Root) with procuring respectable dates who will prevent them from making trouble, make a TV appearance to spread the word of their eligibility. The pair of hoodlums played by Plaza and Kendrick see the appearance and mostly hear the words “free vacation,” and go about conning the two young men into bringing them along. Naturally, hijinks ensue.
The main draw of Mike and Dave, due July 8, lies in the quartet of consistently entertaining performers that make up the cast. Plaza needs a good vehicle to cleanse the Dirty Grandpa stench from herself, and it’s been a while since Kendrick was able to really show off her chops as a comedic actress. From the looks of it, DeVine and Efron can affect a believable brotherly chemistry, with Efron in particularly having grown into a reliable comic lead over the past few years. So long as the script can meet the talent halfway, spending ninety-or-so minutes with these four actors should be a pretty good time.
