Assemblyman Cliff Crouch held a forum Saturday in Walton to inform voters how the NY SAFE Act will impact gun owners and their right to defend themselves and their families.  So far Crouch has had forums on the issue in Chenango, Delaware and Broome counties and says that people are beginning to understand the elements of the law.

The NY SAFE Act is now law and can’t be repealed or changed because Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver will not allow the bill to come to the floor, and the governor would not sign it. There is one thing gun owners can do to keep their gun ownership private.

"The opt out forms, we have those out, you can get them in the county clerk's office," Crouch said. "We're encouraging people to fill them out opt out of having your name or address disclosed as a gun owner. There's an assault weapons registration that has to be done according to the law by January. We don't agree with the law one but, so there was no assault weapons on the street and if there was it was totally illegal anyways and what this law does is put a serious imposition on law-abiding citizens anyways."

Crouch said, in general, he found that law enforcement officers are against the law, saying its overkill for a law that will do nothing. The only way to repeal or change the law is to  take it to the courts.
