Chobani Products to be Dropped by Whole Foods Chain
Chobani, producer of Greek yogurt and important local employer, is being dropped by Whole Foods, the large US supermarket chain which focuses on health foods.
At issue is the problem of GMOs, genetically modified organisms, being included in food labeling. Whole Foods has previously stated they will require labeling of all genetically modified foods. "Whole Foods Market challenged its Greek yogurt suppliers to create unique options for shoppers to enjoy - including exclusive flavors, non-GMO options and organic choices," the company said. "At this time, Chobani has chosen a different business model."
"Though we have limited distribution within Whole Foods, they have been a wonderful partner of ours over the years," Chobani said in a statement. "We know our fans love buying our products in their stores and we hope to continue our partnership moving forward."
Chobani further stated that there is "not enough organic milk available to meet our broad consumer demand. We continue to stand by and work with the 875 farms that provide us with milk as they explore new feed options."
