Beware of Cooperstown Email Phishing Scam
Village of Cooperstown employees have been targeted by hackers who have been sending emails that look like they are a request from another Village of Cooperstown employee, asking for assistance, but in reality, the requests are an attempt to collect sensitive personal information. According to AllOTSEGO, these so-called “phishing” messages say “Could you please spare a minute to assist me in completing a task discreetly”. If you get one of these messages delete it immediately.
Mayor Ellen Tillapaugh Kuch provided an example of one of these scam emails (below):
Email subject = REQUEST
Hi (name of recipient),
Could you please spare a minute to assist me in completing a task discreetly? Would be glad to receive your response through email because I’m presently in a meeting.
