I know this is going to sound strange, but hear me out. I've been searching for shining moments in the craziness that's been going on in the world around us these past few weeks as we've all faced the Coronavirus pandemic and I've found one that has to do with facemasks.

I feel like, as a society, we place way more emphasis on outward appearance than we should. We pluck and dye and cake on makeup and deprive ourselves of delicious tastings foods for the sake of meeting society's standard of what we "should" look like.

The Coronavirus has stolen our ability to visit the salon and so many of us are in the same situation when it comes to hair that's grown out, gray roots that are showing, and eyebrows that are extra fluffy. A lot of us have given up on trying to mask what's happening to our bodies and instead have been proud to rock our visible roots, fluffy eyebrows, and makeup-free faces. Because of facemasks.

I've been brave enough to not fuss with my hair or put on makeup when I leave the house, but the reason it's been easier to do so is that when our faces are covered with a mask, nobody really knows who we are (when we're in public, obviously, not when we're someplace like at work). We can get away with 'letting ourselves go' when wearing a facemask.

As a society, we have such major body image issues and it's sad, really. We are so hard on ourselves and we really shouldn't be. We are our worst critics and truly need to learn to be more forgiving of ourselves, especially when we don't have facemasks to hide behind anymore.

Dove released this video a few years ago, but I think that now is a good time to revisit it.
