Two Female Officers Assaulted At Oneonta Police Station by Man Arrested

A man arrested for violating an order of protection seemed to be cooperating following being arrested Tuesday until reaching the Oneonta Police Station.  According to AllOTSEGO, 29-year-old Zachary M. Kaplan had been picked up without incident after violating an order of protection. Once inside the station garage, officers Kristen LaPointe and Amanda Catapano managed to get Kaplan out of the police cruiser when he refused to come out.  After being removed from the vehicle, he somehow slipped out of his handcuffs and proceeded to attack the two officers inside the Oneonta Police Station. Kaplan pulled LaPointe to the ground and Catapano attempted to use her taser to stun him, but was unable to get a good hold.  Catapano ended up getting punched in the face by Kaplan in the struggle. It was LaPointe who then tased Kaplan and the two officers were able to get the suspect under control.

Catapano and Kaplan were transported to Fox Hospital for medical treatment; Catapano was released with minor facial swelling to her face, while Kaplan was kept at the hospital for additional treatment after pre-existing conditions were discovered.

Kaplan was charged with the felonies of escape and assault in the second degree, as well as the misdemeanors of resisting arrest and obstruction of government administration. He has been additionally charged with criminal contempt, first degree, criminal contempt, second degree, harassment, criminal mischief, obstruction of breathing and endangering the welfare of a child.
