The slippers, one of four known pairs to exist, were stolen from a museum dedicated to Judy Garland located in her hometown of Grand Rapids, Minnesota in August of 2005.  Details of the sores' recovery have not been revealed.  Although the iconic shoes have been recovered and returned to the museum, the thieves are still unknown and an investigation continues.

The shoes are valued at approximately $3.5-million dollars. Other than this pair, other sets of ruby slippers can be found in private hands, at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictres to open in Los Angeles in 2018 and the most visible pair, which can be seen at the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.
