Acting Troop-C Commander Captain Eric C. Janis announced Thursday that 1,489 tickets were issued by state police in Troop-C for violations of the state’s mandatory seatbelt laws. This included 51 child restraint violations during the recent two-week enforcement campaign.

When the Buckle Up New York campaign was started in 1999, less than 75 percent of drivers were using safety belts. Today, the continued enforcement and education efforts has brought compliance of the seat belt law to over 90 percent with the number of unbelted fatalities dropping by 73 percent.

Captain Janis says there are still too many people out there who have not made the connection between seat belts and saving lives. In addition to the 1,489 tickets issued for seat belt infractions, troopers made 39 driving while intoxicated arrests, ticketed 689 drivers for speeding and issued 145 distracted driver tickets during the two week period.
