At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Thursday evening, March 14, 2019, Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies, New York State Police and members of the Stamford Fire Department and Emergency Squad responded to a 911 report of a fatal hit-and-run vehicle-pedestrian accident on St. Hwy. 10 (Lake Street) in the Village of Stamford.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim, 24 year-old Shannon L. German, of Stamford, NY, was lying in the roadway when she was struck by an unidentified, northbound tractor trailer that continued traveling north following the collision.

State Highway 10 was subsequently closed to traffic by the New York State Department of Transportation and remained closed for several hours overnight while members of the Delaware County Sheriff's Office and the New York State Police Forensic Identification (FIU) and Collision Reconstruction Units (CRU) conducted their investigation at the scene.

The tractor trailer and driver were subsequently located in the Schenectady area by members of the New York State Police stationed at Princetown. Interviews conducted by members of New York State Police, Princetown, revealed that the truck driver, identified as 50-year-old Peter D. Baldauf, of Delancey, NY, did not see German lying in the roadway and unknowingly struck her while he was driving and therefore did not stop following the collision. Baldauf has not been charged in relation to the accident.

Sheriff Craig S. DuMond credits the swift identification of the involved vehicle and driver, and the subsequent closure in this case, to the “outstanding interagency collaboration of the Delaware County and Schoharie Sheriff’s Offices and New York State Police uniformed Troopers, Investigators and members of the State Police Forensic Identification, Collision Reconstruction and Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Units”.
