Last night a straw vote was held to give residents in the Schenevus and Worcester Central School Districts an opportunity to say "yes" or "no" to both districts merging according to The Schenevus Central School District website. The merger passed in both school districts with Schenevus voters voting 339 to 223 to merge and in Worcester is was a 327 to 140 vote in favor of it.

It's been a long process to get to this point with careful planning and studies involved. The passing of the merger by both district voters means that it can move forward to a binding referendum on Dec. 1, 2021, as long as it is New York State approved. There will be another vote in both school districts in December on the annexation merger. If that vote results in voters approving the merger, then the two districts become one with operations beginning on July 1, 2022. At that point, the Worcester superintendent and school board will remain in place. It's possible that the number of school board members will increase to 7 from the current 5 on the Worcester board.
