The second annual Out of the Darkness Walk fundraiser will be Sept. 8 at Neawha Park in Oneonta.

The walk kicks off the national Suicide Prevention week, running Sept. 9-15. Local event coordinator for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Donna Lange, explained the importance of the walk and why the public should be made aware of the problem.

“We lose approximately one person every 15 minutes to suicide,” she said. “We lose about 36,000 a year to suicide. It is the third-leading illness that we lose people to.”

Registration for the walk starts at 9 a.m. Sept. 8.
