Have you noticed, less traffic in the city of Oneonta, NY this week?  With a population of a little over 13,000, Oneonta will become a really quiet city after this weekend, at least for a little while.  Hartwick College is graduating its seniors this weekend and SUNY Oneonta's graduation ceremonies took place last weekend.  That translates to over half of the population leaving town for the Summer.

Of course there are pros and cons to this scenario.  Although the money students spend around town is surely missed, along with community cultural opportunities that both campuses offer during the school year, the college student absence in town allows plenty of room for tourists to come to Oneonta.  We get a lot of baseball camp families over the course of the season and spill-off from other Cooperstown visitors, which is good for the economy.  It's also nice to have a break from all the college house parties and litter that the college population creates around town.  And traffic certainly becomes considerably lighter, cutting down on travel time around town for residents.

I must say that as much as I enjoy the students not being around during the Summer because I enjoy peace and quiet, I do like having them around during the school year because they are a large part of Oneonta being the great, small city that is.
