Nicolas Cage is thriving in the world of direct- (or, like, almost direct-)-to-video action movies. With small budgets and low stakes, he’s free to do whatever he wants. When Nic Cage does whatever he wants, good (and insane) things happen.

Case in point: The trailer for Primal, the next Cage DTV masterpiece. The plot synopsis is so kooky, mentioning Cage in it by name almost feels redundant. Check this out:

When Frank Walsh (Nicolas Cage), a hunter and collector of rare and exotic animals, bags a priceless white jaguar for a zoo, he figures it’ll be smooth sailing to a big payday. But the ship bearing Frank’s precious cargo has two predators caged in its hold: the cat, and a political assassin being extradited to the U.S. After the assassin breaks free – and then frees the jaguar – Frank feverishly stalks the ship’s cramped corridors in hot pursuit of his prey, right up until the thrilling, unpredictable climax.

I’m so tired of movies regurgitating the same three plots over and over, like the one about the big-game hunter trapped on a boat with a rare white jaguar and a political assassin. Time for something new, Hollywood!

In the meantime, here is the magnificent trailer for the film which features Cage yelling “Got a real nice *cage* for you!” and drunkenly slurring “I! Have hit! The mother lode!”

Primal opens in theaters and on demand on November 8. This one looks like a winner.
