New Yorkers are expecting to hear the death toll in the state has surpassed 1,000 from the coronavirus outbreak, less than a month after the first case was detected in the state.

The virus has torn through New York City and its suburbs with frightening speed. Most of the deaths have happened in a span of just a few days. New York City reported Saturday evening that its toll had risen to 776.

March 29, at the Governor’s daily briefing, the death toll had been put at 965 in the state. The total number of statewide deaths is expected to be updated again today.

Broome County last week reported its third death from COVID-19 with 29 cases confirmed.  Tioga County reported one new case, bringing its total to 7.  Chenango County had six new cases, doubling its confirmed COVID number to 23, Cortland County reported eight cases with Delaware County adding two new cases for a total of nine.

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf has asked for a disaster declaration in order to qualify for more assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 3,394 coronavirus cases and 38 deaths.

The Health Department website reports three COVID-19 cases in Bradford County, one case in Susquehanna County and seven confirmed cases in Wayne County.

The state already received an emergency declaration under the nationwide proclamation in January but the new request would provide additional federal assistance.
