COVID-19 case numbers are really beginning to pick up speed in our Central New York region. The Delta variant is the coronavirus version sweeping through our area now. Among Chenango, Delaware, and Otsego Counties, case numbers are highest currently in Otsego County with the 2 other counties close behind.

According to the Otsego County Department of Health, the virus is spreading quickest in areas where coronavirus vaccinations are the lowest. It certainly doesn't mean that those vaccinated can't get it but it's much less likely. Otsego County Health officials say the virus seems to be hitting the unvaccinated population the most. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that those vaccinated are less likely to contract the Delta variant, or if they do, symptoms are typically milder than they might be if the person was not vaccinated. Masking in public is highly recommended right now for EVERYONE to hinder the spread of the virus.

Otsego County, along with Chenango and Delaware County (DCPH) health departments recently issued statements saying that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has determined that in the three counties, there is a "high transmission" rate of the COVID-19 virus going on right now and case numbers are starting to climb significantly each day. "high transmission" is defined as a positivity rate of 10% or higher in a 7 day period.

With this latest development in mind, health officials are continuing the message to those unvaccinated: "get vaccinated as soon as possible". Currently, the vaccination rate in Chenango County's population 18 and older with at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine is at 65.2%, Delaware County's vaccine rate is at 57.2%. In Otsego County, the percentage of residents 18 and older with at least one dose is 64.0%.
