Laurens Woman Takes Plea Deal in Rape Case
Yesterday, Otsego County Judge John Lambert handed down an unwelcome sentencing to 37-year-old Laurens defendant Shelly Ann Young. According to AllOTSEGO, Young had been charged with second-degree rape and first-degree dissemination of indecent material to a minor in January of 2020.
Young was taken into custody by Otsego County Sheriff's deputies following an investigation which found that Young was sexually involved with a boy under the age of 15 and also sent text messages to the same box requesting he have sex with her and perform other sexual acts. Young was taken into custody in February of 2020.
Answering to the charges yesterday, Young stated, “Honestly, it happened fast,” and went on to say, "it was a mistake”. Young claims that she believed the boy was 16 although she did say, “but it still don’t make a difference”.
Her court appearance was to take a plea deal in which Young will serve 180 days in jail on weekends, from 6 p.m. Fridays to 6 a.m. Mondays. In addition, Young must waive the right to appeal most aspects of her case and pay fees and surcharges of several thousand dollars. An order of protection for the victim in the case was renewed by Judge Lambert.
Coming up on May 24 at Otsego County Court in Cooperstown, Young will be officially sentenced.
