JUST IN: Delaware County Sheriff Tom Mills to Retire
Delaware County Sheriff Tom Mills Announces His Retirement:
To the People of Delaware County,
It is with a heavy heart I announce my retirement as your Sheriff effective August 28, 2017. It has truly been an honor and a privilege to serve the people of Delaware County as your Sheriff for nearly 19 years. However, after 50 years in law enforcement I have decided the time is right for me to retire. I thank you, the residents of Delaware County, for your steadfast interest and support of the Sheriff’s Office. As we have served you, you in turn have given us your support.
When I was elected Sheriff, my goal was to make Delaware County a safer place to live, work and raise a family. I strongly believe my goal has been realized. Rest assured, this accomplishment will continue to be sustained, expanded upon and supported through the dedication and tireless efforts of the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office personnel who serve the County. I am truly grateful knowing I have had the good fortune of working with some of the finest men and women in law enforcement.
Thank you to all my employees; Deputies, Corrections Officers, as well as Administrative and Civilian staff who have worked tirelessly to support me and promote the Office of Sheriff with honor, service and professionalism over the years.
I recognize that there is still a significant drug problem in the United States which continues to affect and impact the residents of our County. The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office will continue to focus on this problem and will continue to combat this problem on all levels. We simply cannot ignore this problem that is literally destroying individuals and families, as well as our society.
In closing, effective August 28th 2017 my Undersheriff, Craig DuMond, will officially become your Acting Sheriff until my vacancy is filled by appointment or election in November. Undersheriff DuMond will be seeking election and has my complete endorsement and support. Undersheriff DuMond has made many positive additions and accomplishments over the past several years; the creation of a K9 Division, School Substation and Resource Officer Program, and a Special Response Team to name a few. He is an outstanding administrator who has streamlined and professionalized operations, reduced operating expenses of the jail and generated hundreds of thousands of revenue for the County and, most importantly, served as my ambassador and direct conduit with the public. I place my full faith, confidence and support in Undersheriff DuMond’s abilities to serve you as your next Sheriff.
Faithfully Yours,
Thomas E. Mills, Sheriff
Delaware County Sheriff’s Office
