In the heart of Canandaigua, New York, Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park stands as a timeless tribute to the Gilded Age, historic preservation, and the beauty of meticulously curated horticulture.

More than just a public garden within the New York State Parks System, Sonnenberg is a manifestation of the love and philanthropy of Frederick Ferris and Mary Clark Thompson. This couple transformed their Victorian summer home into a magnificent estate called Sonneberg which translates to "Sunny Hill."

A Rich Historical Tapestry

After Mary Clark Thompson's passing in 1923, much of the estate became a Veterans Administration Hospital. Unfortunately, years of neglect and vandalism severely impacted the gardens and structures. The revival of Sonnenberg began in earnest in 1972, spurred by a grassroots movement determined to preserve and restore its grandeur. This effort was formalized when President Richard Nixon facilitated the transfer of the estate to a newly formed nonprofit organization dedicated to Sonnenberg's revival.

By 2006, the State of New York played a pivotal role in securing Sonnenberg's future, clearing significant debt, and allocating funds for future renovations. Restoration efforts have revitalized key features of the estate, including the veranda, belvedere, and pergola in the Old-Fashioned Garden.
