Mother Nature’s Sense of Humor: Varied Snowfall In New York’s Southern Tier
Winter finally arrived in the Southern Tier with the first significant snowfall over the weekend. Are you as glad as I am that it waited until the work week was over?
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, some areas got hit harder than others. Port Crane in Broome County got a whopping 9.5 inches of snow, while poor Port Dickinson only got 5.0 inches.
But the differences in how much snow fell didn't stop with Broome County. In Chenango County, Norwich got 10 inches of the fluffy white stuff, while South Plymouth only getting 4.8 inches. In Delaware County, Masonville got hit hard with 12 inches, while Davenport got a measly 3 inches.
In Tioga County, Spencer got the jackpot with 8.2 inches of snow, while Waverly scraped by with 4.8 inches. It's almost like the snow was playing favorites. At least we finally got some of that winter wonderland we've been waiting for!
Here's the next question - is this only the beginning? Hold onto your snow hats because there's more to come but probably not in the way you're thinking. The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Wind Advisory from 3 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9th, through 4 a.m. on Wednesday, January 10th.
They're expecting the winds to blow between 20 and 30 miles per hour, with gusts up to 50 miles per hour across the entire Southern Tier. Hold onto your hats because it's gonna be really windy!
Tuesday's forecast is interesting. We're looking at a mix of rain and snow during the day, with everything turning to pure rain after 4 p.m. It's going to be a lot warmer than usual with temperatures reaching around 42 degrees. So, it might feel a little weird to see snow coming down while it's relatively warm outside before turning into all rain.
Wind Advisory and Flood Watch
Tuesday night could be a real washout as The National Weather Service is predicting between three quarters and one inch of rain. WHAT!!! RAIN!. And with all the snow that's already on the ground, we could see some potential flooding. If you haven't done so yet, get your rain boots ready!
Despite all the talk of storms this week, it doesn't look like we'll be getting any substantial snow in the next few days. If you've been panicking about the possibility of being snowed in, you can breathe a sigh of relief.
There you have it - the update on our winter adventures in the Southern Tier. We've had our first taste of snow, some windy weather coming and a mix of rain and snow to keep things interesting.
You've been waiting for it and now it's here. Winter is in full swing for 2024.
