Community Champions: Oxford American Legion’s Impactful Blood Drives
The Fort Hill American Legion Post 376 in Oxford has had a longstanding tradition of hosting blood drives in partnership with the American Red Cross for over two decades.
The unwavering commitment of Post 376 to community service has resulted in a significant increase in blood donations, leading to a recent recognition from the American Red Cross for the Legion's outstanding achievements in 2023.
Commander Darlene Ardron spearheads the Legion's involvement in blood donation efforts. Working closely with Mary Hardendorf, the Oxford Red Cross Drive Coordinator, Darlene, and her team collaborate seamlessly with Red Cross volunteers and staff to facilitate a smooth and efficient blood donation process, from registration to post-donation care at the canteen.
In a ceremony on Saturday, July 13, Mary Hardendorf presented Commander Darlene Ardron with a special "Certificate of Recognition" and a commemorative pin to acknowledge the Legion's exceptional accomplishment of collecting 174 units of blood in 2023, marking an annual growth of 53 units.
The certificate praised the Legion's commitment and dedication to the American Red Cross Premier Blood Partner Program, emphasizing the crucial role they play in supporting the Red Cross's lifesaving mission, which delivers nearly 6.4 million blood products to hospital patients each year.
The recognition comes at a pivotal time as a national blood shortage continues during the summer heat wave, underscoring the urgent need for blood donations.
To continue their lifesaving efforts, the Fort Hill American Legion Post 376 will be hosting two more blood drives this year on September 7 and November 2, from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Individuals looking to contribute can visit RedCross.org to schedule an appointment, learn about incentives, manage appointments, and more.
