Find “Someone Like You” at a Funeral? [Video]

Music at funerals isn't a new thing.  Traditionally, hymns are shared during services or are played in the background.  But a popular trend is playing a song that relates to the deceased or is a favorite song of the individual.  I have never heard pop music played at a funeral until last year.  After the service, before anyone got up to pay respects, Sarah McLachlan's "I Will Remember You" poured out of the speakers.  I  was taken back at first.  Was this funeral home doing something new and hip?  This seemed very different to me at first but as I sat there and listened I realized this was a time to to reflect.  It worked.  It was not what I was used to but it worked.

The Co-operative Funeralcare, the largest funeral director in the UK, has comprised a list of the most requested funeral songs.  The study shows a decline in hymnals and a rise in pop or contemporary music.  I do find it very odd that Adele's "Someone Like You' is at the #22 position.  It is a great song but at a funeral?  "...Nevermind, I'll find someone like you..."  Not really the lyrics you'd expect to hear as you are saying goodbye.  Maybe it is because of the chart success of the song.  Maybe it was a favorite song of the deceased.  It doesn't really seem to be a good fit to me.

As for me, I think I like the idea of playing a meaningful song is okay as long as the message is clear and reflects the character of the person.  I don't know what song I'd pick and I'm a little nervous about what might be picked for me.  I'll get back to you when I find the song that captures 'Tracie'.
