Did You See It? New Blockbuster Film Tells a Lie About Albany, NY

On May 20, 2022, the feature film Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers debuted on the streaming service Disney+.

In case you haven't seen it, the movie tells the story of Chip and Dale, two cartoon chipmunks who starred in a television series of the same name, and their fight to take down a cartoon bad guy and save the cartoon world.

It's a fun movie, and one that's received generally favorable reviews from critics. Albany, New York is mentioned multiple times during the movie, and is referenced as the birthplace of one of the main human characters.

Within the Albany storyline, however, the movie tells a lie about the Capital City.

What Lie Does 'Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers' Tell About Albany, NY?

A group of perceptive Capital Region residents created a Reddit thread for this storyline, called Albany in Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers. They posted a clip of the scene where Albany is predominantly referenced, which you can see below.

As explained in the scene, LAPD officer Ellie Steckler re-iterates that she's from Albany, New York, where she grew up watching The Rescue Rangers on television. The two chipmunks, Chip and Dale (voiced by John Mulaney and Andy Samberg, respectively) retort that The Rescue Rangers did not air in Albany, and were subsequently confused as to how Ellie had watched the show as a kid.

At one point during the movie, they even suspect Ellie to secretly be working for the bad guys, and a main reason for this conspiracy theory is because of her knowledge of the show despite not having been able to watch it in Albany.

That all being said, it appears as though the show did in fact air in the Capital Region at this time, causing a few online users to raise their digital eyebrows at this storyline.

Multiple different online users confirmed that Rescue Rangers did air in Albany in the 1990's. One person on the website Resetera wrote that the show aired in Albany in 1991. Another user who commented on IMDb added that "The Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers cartoon did in fact air on TV in Albany on WXXA FOX 23."

Now, is this a malicious lie? No, of course not. That said, it's an interesting use of Albany, New York in a movie, and makes you wonder how the writing staff landed on Albany for the city that would be mentioned in this way.
