Cuomo Shuts Down New York: Essential Workers Only
Governor Andrew Cuomo says all non-essential employees in New York state should stay home as he expands efforts to control the spread of coronavirus.
Cuomo said his new executive order will take effect Sunday evening.
The governor Friday announced what he called "the most drastic action we can take."
Grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies and healthcare providers are among the businesses that may stay open:
- Grocery stores
- Restaurants
- Pharmacies
- Healthcare providers
- Gas stations
- Convenience stores
- Banks
- Hardware stores
- Laundromats and other cleaners
- Childcare providers
- Auto repair
- Utilities
- Warehouses/Distributors
- Plumbers and skilled contractors
- Animal care
- Transportation
- Construction companies and many other kinds of manufacturers
Cuomo said the state will enforce the order with the possibility that fines may be levied against businesses that ignore it. He said there is no plan to assess penalties against individuals.
The governor stressed he is not imposing a "shelter in place" order. He said it is important for state residents to remain inside as much as possible.
