Assemblyman Cliff Crouch announced a statewide volunteer firefighter recruitment program called RecruitNY, a program that many local fire departments will be participating in to attract new recruits.

The RecruitNY campaign will take place statewide on April 27-28.

Crouch pointed out that most fire departments offer firefighter youth programs for teenagers between 16 and 18 years of age. During the RecruitNY program, local fire departments will discuss the requirements to be a volunteer, as well as conduct demonstrations, answer questions, and let visitors know how to get involved in their local fire department and emergency first response team.

Interested individuals can contact their local fire department to determine if they are participating in the open house and, if so, when their doors will be open to the public.

Crouch noted that volunteers provide services that are worth an estimated $7 billion, and if local emergency services were professionalized, the increased cost to property taxpayers would be significant.

For additional information, contact your local fire department or visit recruitny.org.
