Cobleskill Police and EMS Attacked By Car Crash Victim

Most people would be grateful to receive help during an auto accident but that wasn't the case following a one-car accident on the evening of June 2 at the intersection of State Routes 165 and 10 in the Town of Seward.

According to Cobleskill NY State Police, troopers, EMS and a fire crew responded to accident where a motorist had sped through a stop sign, collided with a guard rail on the shoulder of the road, and then landed in a field off the road after hitting a livestock fence.

When troopers arrived at the scene and interviewed the crash victim, 37-year-old Liam M. O’Connor of Richmondville, they smelled alcohol and observed that he was impaired. Before his blood alcohol level could be tested, EMS proceeded to check him for injuries and treat him. As he was being examined, O'Connor became agitated and combative, so much so that he is accused of physically attacking EMS, fire crew members and even a Schoharie County deputy that were assisting on the scene during an attempt to get him into a trooper patrol car and transport him to the Cobleskill State Police barracks.

Once at the police station, O'Connor was given a field sobriety test which showed that his BAC was .14% resulting in a Driving While Intoxicated charge. Additional charges included: Assault 2^nd degree, Obstruction of Governmental Administration 2^nd degree, and Resisting Arrest.

Following his arraignment, O’Connor was taken to the Schoharie County Jail and will be due back in court at a later date to answer for the charges.
