It's children's book week, and not only are children books being banned now, but have always been doing it. For whatever reason. I've picked out only ten books that have once been banned and /or still are. Believe it or not, parents are the most frequent challengers of books and the school libraries are the frequent places where the challenges are made.

Huck Fin

"Huckleberry Finn" has been criticized, censored, and banned for many things, including obscenity, atheism, bad grammar, low moral tone, and racism. It was first banned legally in 1954.

Catcher in the Rye

This was the most frequently banned book between 1966-75. Many public schools banned it because of the main characters sexual exploits and the vulgar language. It's a great book that has seen many censorship fights. It is now included in many school curriculum.

 

Lord of the Flies

In 1992, "Lord of the Flies" was challenged by a Florida public school district because of its profanity, sex, god, women, and the disabled. The "Lord of the Flies" has also been reinstated in many schools.

To Kill a Mockingbird

The racial content, profanity, and references to rape have caused many schools to challenge the validity of the novel as a teaching tool. It has been removed from many school libraries and classrooms.

 Green Eggs and Ham

California had this book banned from schools until as recently as 1991, claiming that it included homosexual innuendo and seduction. It wasn't reinstated until after Dr. Suess' death.
