Bail Raised for Bugel

A man Oneonta police say may be responsible for at least one of the fires started over the weekend is still in jail. A judge has raised the bail of 22-year-old Gable Bugel to $15,000 or a $30,000.

Investigators say Bugel admitted to trying to start a fire behind the community bank on Main Street after he was found hiding behind the YMCA.

The incident was the last in a series of fires that were started around the city between Friday and Sunday nights.

Bugel has pleaded not guilty. The police department is investigating the other fires and questioning Bugel about them.

NYSEG Enlists Helicopters to Check Power Lines

NYSEG says helicopters will be flying along power lines again over the next two weeks.

This time they will be inspecting high voltage wires in Chenango County.

The inspections are routine according to the utility.

NYSEG inspectors say the helicopters provide an excellent vantage point to see the condition of the power lines, and the system is quick and efficient.

The inspection schedule will be done at a later time if the weather turns bad.

Pacherille to be Tried as Adult

A judge has decided a former Cooperstown high school student will not be sentenced as a juvenile offender.

Anthony Pacherille, 17, was sentenced to 11 years in state prison for the shooting of a classmate in April two years ago. Pacherille’s lawyer asked that his client be resentenced as juvenile, since the murder was committed when he was 16 years old.

Pacherille took a plea deal of one count of attempted murder so he would not be charged with a hate crime. His victim, Wesley Lippit, was black.

Hanna Speaks Out Against ‘Obama Care’

Republican congressman Richard Hanna has commented on hidden taxes in the Affordable Health Care Act, known as “Obama Care”. He says one of them is a 1 percent tax on banking transactions. Hanna says he is totally against the idea, citing two reasons.

With the one percent tax on banking transactions and interest rates on savings currently hovering around 0.5 and 0.6 percent, it would cost for the banking privilege. With the direct deposit of a social security check for example, soon to be required, a recipient would lose 1 percent of that money each month.

Hanna Concerned About Congress Bickering

Republican representative Richard Hanna is concerned about the climate in congress lately; he finds that in talking to his constituents, one of their biggest concerns seems to be the partisan ship in congress.

Hanna says everyone gets the problem but the solutions and willingness to compromise on solutions is absent. This being a presidential election year also contributes to the tension on both sides of the aisle.

SUNY Oneonta Named Top Green College

The Princeton review has named SUNY Oneonta as a top green college.

The review’s guide to 322 green colleges has recognized SUCO for its commitment to sustainability.

The publication takes a look at a college’s academic offerings and other factors for its ranking system.

Oneonta’s efforts include energy conservation initiatives, adherence to green construction standards, academic majors offered at the biological field station at Cooperstown, and recycling programs.

SUCO has been listed in the book since it was first published in 2010.

Wildfire Danger Elevated

Dry weather conditions in NYS have led to a high danger of wildfires. As a result of lower amounts of snow this past winter and lack of substantial rain this spring, wildfire danger is much greater than usual.

The governor’s office is warning that wildfires can spread rapidly and increase in intensity rapidly. Governor Cuomo is urging New Yorkers to refrain from starting any kind of outdoor fires, take extra caution in making sure a lit cigarette is completely out and keep an eye on your outdoor grill.

The state has taken steps to lower the risks with a heightened state of readiness.

Seward Calls for Veteran Nomination

State senator James Seward is inviting local residents to nominate veterans from their community, whose service to their country makes them worthy of induction into the veteran’s hall of fame.

Yesterday The NY State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports released their teams for classes AA, A, B, C, and D. South Kortright’s Robin Wood made the first team in Class D and her teammate Kayla Craft will be on the fifth team. Jordan Beers of Franklin made the second team. From Oneonta, Mariah Ruff made the second team in Class B and her teammate Kelsey Baker will be on the eighth team. Topping honors off for Class C, Carolyn Butler of Walton was selected for the eighth team.

In a Tri Valley meet yesterday, Davenport/South Kortright boys topped Downsville and Andes came in 3rd. On the girls side, Davenport/South Kortright came in first with Andes in second and Downsville 3rd.
Meanwhile in Milford, the Milford boys ran to first place with Schenevus/Worcester in 2nd and Stamford in 3rd. On the girls side, Milford also placed first with Schenevus Worcester 2nd and Stamford in 3rd.
Cherry Valley Springfield boys ran by Edmeston and Franklin and it was the same line-up for the girls.

College Baseball

Freshman pitcher Alex Mastrianni threw a complete game, five-hitter to lead the Oneonta State baseball team to a 5-1 victory in game 2 of a SUNYAC doubleheader yesterday versus Plattsburgh. The win for the Red Dragons earned them a split for the day after they dropped game 1, 6-4.

College Softball

The SUNY Oneonta softball team got a solid pitching performance from freshman Katie O’Flynn in game 2 of a doubleheader split with Ithaca College yesterday. O’Flynn allowed five hits in the complete game shutout of the Bombers to earn her third win of the season as the Red Dragons won 7-0.

Women’s College Lacrosse

The Oneonta State women’s lacrosse team picked up a 17-10 road win last night at Scranton. With the victory, the Red Dragons run its season record to 10-2 overall.
